In September, India suspended its visa services for Canadian nationals indefinitely due to heightened tensions between the two countries. India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, discussed the strained relations, highlighting that the decision to halt visa issuance was primarily driven by concerns for the safety of Indian diplomats in Canada.
“The current state of our relationship faces challenges, primarily associated with a specific segment of Canadian politics and the policies arising from it,” Minister Jaishankar explained. “Visa issuance has been a major point of concern. Several weeks ago, we temporarily suspended visa processing in Canada due to the compromised safety of our diplomats. Ensuring the well-being and security of our diplomats is of paramount importance, as per the Vienna Convention.”
Jaishankar expressed optimism for a positive shift in the situation, emphasizing the importance of rebuilding confidence among Indian diplomats. He stated, “We are closely monitoring the situation, and I hope and expect that conditions will improve, allowing us to resume visa processing soon.”
Additionally, Minister Jaishankar clarified the necessity of India adopting a firm stance, seeking diplomatic parity with Canada. This firm stance led to Canada withdrawing 41 of its diplomats before the set deadline to avoid potential loss of diplomatic immunity.
Jaishankar attributed the need for diplomatic parity to “continuous interference” in India’s internal affairs by Canadian personnel. The Canadian Prime Minister criticized India’s actions, labeling them a violation of the Geneva Convention.
