A day after Canada announced the departure of its 41 diplomats and their family members from India, the US and UK supported Ottawa’s stance, affirming that Delhi’s move to seek diplomatic parity violated the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
In their respective statements on the matter, the US and the UK endorsed Canada’s position, emphasizing the necessity of having diplomats on the ground for resolving diplomatic disputes.
These two countries, both members of the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing alliance, which also includes Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, also called on India to cooperate with the Canadian investigation into the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey, British Columbia in June of this year.
