Mickey Arthur, the team director, is optimistic that Pakistan’s team can stage a remarkable comeback, starting Friday when they face a strong South African side.
Pakistan currently finds itself in a challenging situation, having experienced three consecutive defeats in the 2023 World Cup, including an unexpected loss to Afghanistan. Their campaign appears to be hanging by a thread, with only a miraculous turnaround offering hope. Mickey Arthur, the team director, is confident that Pakistan is ready to initiate a remarkable resurgence as they prepare to take on a formidable South African team in Ahmedabad.
Initially, Pakistan’s World Cup campaign in India showed promise as they secured victories against Sri Lanka and the Netherlands in their first two matches in Hyderabad. However, their journey took a harsh turn with a one-sided loss to arch-rivals India in Ahmedabad, followed by a defeat to Australia and a stunning upset by Afghanistan.
Despite these setbacks, Pakistan currently occupies the fifth spot in the points table. Nevertheless, their chances of advancing to the World Cup semifinals seem to be diminishing, considering the growing gap from the top four. Nonetheless, Arthur remains hopeful, with Pakistan aiming for a miraculous six-match winning streak to claim the title.
In a statement to PCB Digital, Arthur stated, “We said in the change room the other night that we have got six matches to win the World Cup. We have to get on a streak and win six in a row. We know that as a unit, we understand that as a team, we must ensure that our strategy is flawless. We must ensure that our execution is impeccable, and if we achieve that, there is no reason why we cannot win the World Cup.”
Pakistan faces a formidable challenge in their upcoming match against an in-form South Africa. The Proteas have suffered only one defeat, also to Afghanistan, in five tournament games, placing them second in the points table.
“They are a very strong cricket team, full of confidence due to their excellent performance. However, I firmly believe that if we adhere to our fundamentals and discipline, our skills will shine, and we can defeat any opponent,” added Arthur.
